Play the classic on modern operating systems and hardware. This is a fan-made engine reimplementation — you'll need your own copy of the original game data. Free to download, no account required. Installation scripts and instructions are included in the download.
What's new in FirstHOMM
FirstHOMM keeps the 1995 original intact while adding modern conveniences and new content on top of the classic experience:
- Cross-platform support — native builds for Windows 11 and macOS (Apple Silicon M1+), so you can play on modern operating systems and hardware.
- 11 additional languages — play in more languages than the original release supported. DE, FR, PL, RU include translated buttons. SE, NO, DK, FI, ES, IT, BR use English buttons.
- Restored intros from the 1995 CES Demo — two long-lost intro videos recovered from the 1995 CES demo build, including the New World Computing intro. They play on startup and are fully skippable.
- Select a starting faction in single player games — You can now adjust any randomized starting faction from the standard game menu. It is still initially randomized, but you can now adjust it while setting the game parameters.
- A brand-new campaign — an extra campaign game beyond the original with some new twists and victory conditions.
-
Optional modern enhancements — toggle any of these
on or off from the Modern Options menu:
- Allow spellcasting in AutoBattle
- Unit stack splitting within hero armies and garrisons
- Alternate Hydra structure art (from the 1995 CES Demo)
- Build status indicator on the castle locator
- Battle hex tile outline
- AutoBattle resolver dialog
- Trading post
- Heroes on horseback in battle (from the 1995 CES Demo)
- Bad Luck from Fizbin of Misfortune
- Catapult can target garrison arrow tower

Need the original game files?
FirstHOMM needs the data files from the original “Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest” (1995). If you own the original game discs — either the DOS or the Windows 95 release — you can use those files directly.
Don't have the discs? An official, DRM-free copy is available from GOG.com, and its game files work with FirstHOMM.
Support the project
FirstHOMM is free. If you'd like to help cover hosting and development, donations are welcome and entirely optional — thank you.

Watch how it was built
FirstHOMM grew out of a devlog series on YouTube — a documentary of sorts, following the project from first experiments to the finished engine you can download here. If you're curious how it came together, the videos walk through the whole journey. Subscribing helps the channel and lets you follow what comes next.
